While there may be some actual interest in possibly changing sidearms, I really believe the main thing the DOD is after is budget money and the perception of their image.

They've tentatively identified a "need" which needs to be identified, verified, qualified and thereby turned into a formal issue. All of which takes budget money. Then there's the behind the scenes stroking of various congressional critters, lobbists, manufacturers etc. to gin up support. The prospective job numbers become important. Of course all of this shows the DOD support for change, sensitivity toward the troops, "new realities" (actual and imaginary). etc.

Given budget issues, I don't really see this going anywhere.

There's an old tale of Beretta giving senior NCOs a tour of their plant after getting the M9 contract. One of the guys pointed out that the sharp corners in the locking block cuts in the slides could be a problem. Per the story, the Beretta rep pointed their nose in the air and, whilst looking down it at the lowly NCO, said: "Pietro Beretta has been making guns since 17??." If true, I'd kinda like to think the NCO in question got to pee on the leg of the rep.

Has anyone who sent back an R51 gotten a replacement or offer yet?
Geoff
Who hasn't heard it mentioned, but I don't know of anyone who actually bought one.

No replacement yet; it is still early for that, I think ... maybe a couple more months?
No offer for me. From what I recall they've only offered to replace the R-51 with the R1 1911 and, shockingly, I already own one and while I like it I don't want another.
I'm content to wait and hope Remington still makes this right. We'll see.
