New (to me) Taurus 85

I finally bought the .38 offered to me by a co-worker, today. $100. Finish is great, nothin to complain about. 3'' barrel, 5-shot. Its borderline too small for my hands, but I intended it for my fiance's use.

Anyway, I took it out, and popped off a few rounds to test for accuracy. Informal, and only shooting at a range of 7 yards, it did pretty well. I didn't have any official factory made targets, so I took a cardboard that came out of a t-shirt, and drew a target. real professional, huh? hahaha. anyway, here's a pic of the gun, and a pic of the target. I'd say its a pretty good buy at $100.

I bought a stainless 85CH (concealed hammer) new in '97, and I like it a lot. Good gun.

yeah, its not too bad. recoil is pretty polite, but the .38 sure ain't a dragon-slayer round. I wouldn't wanna get hit with it, but I wouldn't wanna get hit with anything if I could help it. I think its a fine carry gun though. And I was surprised how the accuracy wasn't too bad either. I do think its a fine firearm.

Newer .38 Special loads are downright potent, I prefere .38+P to .357 Mag, especially in short barrels. I'd say you did well.

They are coming out with some respectable +p loads. The necessary evil of the thing is the short barrel though. I've heard it said many, many times that you need a higher velocity to reliably open a hollow point. GoldDot came out with those short barrel loads, though. Or Pow-R-Ball. I think that's just a deal where those will open up just thru compression. But I'm probably wrong.

I just checked the speer site, and they actually had a thing up about the .38spcl +p short barrel GD, and it looks like that's the best way to go. I'm a firm believer in GoldDots. My sig doesn't like em very much, so I use Black Talons (Rangers) in it, but I think the way to go may just be the SBGDHP.
