MEGASTAR .45 ?
I'm new here and wanted some opinions on a recent aquisition. I picked up a N.I.B. Star "MegaStar" .45 ACP for $250.
This is my first .45 and I was wondering if you folks could tell me anything about it.
I know that it is a heavy stainless steel pistol, which is fine by me, since I got it to shoot Falling Plates, Bowling Pins and other 3D target type shooting.
Any input, good or bad is greatly appreciated. I'm going to attempt a "Bianchi Cup" match on Sunday and can't decide between the MegaStar or my S&W .38 "Combat Masterpiece" wheelgun (Don't blame me for the name, that was S&W's choice!).
Before I would try a match with the weapon, I'd get to know it better. They are heavy, but the examples that I remember shooting were reliable. Magazines may be a problem, as Star is gone now. I'd try to score a stash of them ASAP. Parts are available from Numrich Arms/Gun Parts Corp.
These were outgrowths of the Firestar design IIRC. :D
Keep it lubricated and it will survive any Bianchi Cup, unless you shoot the 38 better. My brother has had one for 10yr with no problems.
Retraction, he had the compact. For pins you might want the punch of the 45. For paper punching you need the 1 you are most familiar with.
There's not doubt that Star has always made good guns. Their only problem is having the right gun and then marketing. The only one they really hit out of the park was the Firestar. When it came out, it was a huge step forward in compact 9mm's and it was a very good, and accurate gun. The full size guns that came afterward were very good guns, but they were too big and heavy for mainstream America.
You made a good purchase and I'll bet that gun will be around for a long time. Ought to make a good home defense piece.
You're right, that was a good one, but I don't think sales were nearly as good as the Firestar line.
