Goodbye Cabela's

It's kind of hard to believe, but Bass Pro is buying Cabela's. I just took a three-week retirement "walkabout" (I took a car), and the Cabela's mother ship in Sidney, Nebraska was one stop on the pilgrimage.

I shop at both Cabela's and Bass Pro, and I know there's kind of a Costco vs. Sam's Club vibe going on there, but I must say I've always preferred Cabela's for some reason. We just got a Cabela's here in the Charlotte area about a year ago, and I'll be a little sorry to see it switch over to Bass Pro. They're both decent in my opinion, and I won't lose any sleep over this, but I can't help but feel that the competition between the two was good for us consumers.

I think I've ordered from Bass Pro before, but I am much more familiar with Cabela's. This saddens me ... I like the name, they've always done right by me. I hope Bass Pro doesn't muck around too much with the Cabela's stores.

At my age I don't accept change easily.

Bass Pro is about 3 miles from my house and Cabella's is in Buda, TX.

It now appears that Bass Pro intends to keep the Cabela's name on the stores. I hope this turns out better than Sears + K-Mart.

Given that the Bass Pros around here are 60% fishing, shooting lodged somewhere in the other 40%, and Cabela's seems to be the reverse ratio... if they're smart they'll remember that they cater to two different sets of clientele.

Then again, doesn't BP go PC Pussy and pull all the Politically Incorrect Guns off the shelves every now and again?

Well, Academy certainly does. Buddy down in Pharr, TX says his local Academy has ARs back in the gun case.

Sadly, even way out in the sticks as far from the Bloomer Bedwetters here in WA as you can get they're still spewing the "it's a business decision, MSR's don't sell for us" BS.

Not that I'd trust a Wal-Barf Special AR, with how so much else of their stock is built with cut-rate components so the suppliers can meet their cost-per demands... *stares pointedly at computer aisle*

Us folks in NEFL don't have either one. Next year Bass Pro is supposed to open just North of me at the new I95 bypass.

I have stopped at Bass Pro when I used to make trips to Orlando, never saw anything worth buying.

Was Cabela's losing money? That means a business model change in a hurry.

I bought an AR (S&W Sporter 2) at Academy a few weeks back. They remain my go-to because they are simple and no-nonsense with good prices--and there are several around Birmingham.
Bass Pro's ridiculous winding driveways is a huge annoyance to me, so I avoid them.
Cabela's and Gander Mt are both nice, while Dicks and Field & Stream seem to cater to the 'Fudds'--no 'evil' looking rifles or pistols there.
