To Shep's point, seeing the French throw in with an AR-derived weapon is fascinating given their usual streak towards independence in military service weapons. It also increases the STANAG concept, with more cross-training and such. A person familiar with one AR type weapon is more able to pick up and use another if they have to.
I just keep thinking of the French police, who have had quite a few Mini-14s from what I have seen. A fine choice of rifle. (As others have talked about before, probably dating back in selection to the 1980s and the days of the last go-around of violent Euroterrorism in the 1970s and 1980s before the fall of the Berlin Wall.) So they do know decent rifles over there.
To be a bit picky, the 416 is a piston system, but its genesis is still Armalite.
