Tubbs' Shotgun on MIAMI VICE (TV)

This is usually claimed to be an Ithaca Model 37, cut down. However, I remember a very old article that said the gun was a Wilson-modified Mossberg Model 500 (but I seem to remember the guy who built it was called Jim, not Bill of Wilson Combat). Of course I don't have that article any longer. Would anyone know for sure?

Cheers

[s]Do you mean the double barrel or[/s] The pump w/ the foregrip?

Ithaca did make a factory shorty in those days, I don't recall what they may have called it, but it was less than 18 inch in the barrel. IIRC, it came with both the pistol grip and a full length stock.

If the item shown in the photos is real, it's definately an Ithaca since the bottom ejecting Ithaca doesn't have an ejection port.

Again, IIRC, they used to-way back-make a 20 gauge double barrel with a pistol grip and about 10-12" barrels they called the Auto-Burgler.

This is NOT an Ithaca.

I collect "AOW"s and am passing familiar with most of them. Tubbs' shotgun was an "Ithaca Stakeout" You could get them in 20 and 12 gauge and the transfer tax was only $5.00 for them. My information on the Miami Vice shorty was that it was the 20 ga example. The tubular foregrip was welded to the action tube and didn't fold. One of absolute pets is my "Mossberg/ Cobray 'Rogue' " in 12 gauge. It is a Cobray factory build and has an 11.75 inch barrel with a barrel shroud and a pistol grip. The tube holds 3 rounds of 2.75" 12 ga. I also have seen a Remington 870 in what was termed the Wilson "Witness Protection" shotgun. Those are easily recognized because the originator, (not Wilson), didn't put on a rear pistol grip. They cut the wood buttstock and modified it into a "paddle" shaped grip. Wilson Combat still does short 870s as far as I know. One of the Class III guys locally has a new Mossberg conversion that has a 7" barrel and it has a folding, locking tube grip for the pump grip. I carried the Cobray for about 15 years prior to retiring and the outside got banged and worn, but mechanically it is still new. I had a Class III dealer do a "LauerCoat" on it in flat black recently and retired it to the safe.
Regards :D

IIRC Jim Wilson, no connection I know of with Wilson Combat or SGT formerly of Nashville, TN, was in GA. I think that he did the Wilson Witness Protection 870's for the USMS. I shot one at FLETC in 1987 while on a short detail there. I may have even talked to him on the phone.

The original Stakeouts in 12 gauge were made for a police equipment shop in North Little Rock, AR. I think that they had 50 made. Another Class III dealer told me that they really didn't know how to market them, as they didn't sell well. The 20's came out later and included a web strap on the fore end.

Good shooting!
