A sad commentary on today's standards.

From the article: The bravery of confronting someone with a knife aside, what Briar did was stand up to a bully. Bullying is an epidemic in the U.S. and across the globe, often leading to suicide. In fact, it's the third leading cause of death among young people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Now back in my days at school (60/70's) we were allowed to fight with these bullies with minimum amount of punishment for the school personnel knew who the bullies were! Now kids have to Submit to bullying and take it like little girls. My son got a five day in school suspension for standing up to a bully after I told him to confront him if he continued. The bulling stopped after that.Kids today who play by these whusee rules could not defend themselves if there lives depended on it for the bad guys are getting all the experience.

God bless America

“I asked [the vice principal] ‘In the time it would have taken him to go get a teacher, could that kid’s throat have been slit?’” O'Donnel said. “She said yes, but that’s beside the point ... we ‘don’t condone heroics in this school.’”

So where exactly do you condone hero's at? I think I found a good place for Pellagosi, Billary and Hussein to rule over...oh, and take Boxhead and Fincklestein with you too please!

I need to keep my eyes open for an update, I really, really hope those idiots are reprimanded. It is the complete wrong approach for a real world education.

remember, this is Canada, where we praise the criminals and punish the victims-this didn't make our local news( and I live in Calgary, btw) b/c it was feared that the school's "reputation" would be tarnished- how soon they forget that the montreal massacre would have had a very different outcome had some males with kahoonas stood up to gill- and this was a female vice principle- probably the first instinct is to run and save your own ass
the kid should be applauded, not punished

When I was about fourteen, I got the "I'll be waiting for you after school..." crap from a kid in my class. I wasn't a fighter, and didn't really want to tangle with this kid. Nevertheless, after class, a bunch of his friends surrounded us in a circle, and he got face-to-face with me, spouting the usual "pussy" and "wuss" nonsense. There was no way out, so when he finally escalated things by giving me the two-palmed shove to the chest, I broke his nose.

He went down, gushing blood from his face, and elected not to get up. We were both wearing white shirts. Mine was flecked with a fine spray of his blood; his was soaked in red. The crowd kind of dispersed, and I went home.

When he got home from work my Dad asked what had happened but accepted my explanation and treated the matter as settled. The next day in class, the history teacher, who was also the gym teacher and wrestling coach, awarded me a symbolic "golden gloves" award in front of the entire class, and then dropped it. Nothing else was ever said.

Somehow, I think we were more civilized in those days.

Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit comments on the zero tolerance zombies in USA Today
Zero-tolerance stupidity at school
Quote:
It's already well-established that education majors have the lowest test scores of any college major, but nonetheless tend to graduate with high grades. That certainly suggests a lack of critical faculties. But the constant stream of stories of zero-tolerance stupidity suggests that there's something more lacking here than just academic smarts: There seems to be a severe deficit of the very sort of critical thinking that the education industry purports to be instilling in kids.
Those who can - Do.
Those who can't - Teach.
Those who can't teach - Become a Professor of Education.
