Help with C&R Form

I'm confused about 3 things on the C&R form (OMB 1512-051 that I just got in the mail from the BATF. Any help would be appreciated.

1. I'm filling out the form as an individual. Do I need to fill out section 7? The instructions for that section imply (but don't really say) that the section is just for partnerships, corporations, etc.

2. Sections 8 and 9 start out with "Is applicant or any person named in item 20 above...". Obviously only items 1-7 and 1-8 are above these sections. Also, there are only 12 sections on the form. Am I missing something or do they need a proof reader at BATF?

3. I live in a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Do I send the copy to the chief of police of my little burg, or should it go to the Dallas County Sherrifs office?

Hey DFWplinker,

Yes, those forms can be confusing at times. Lucky for you, I have a copy of mine handy to look at.

1. Do I need to fill out section 7?

Yes. In the left colum, your FULL name goes here.
In the colum named "position and SSN"
put "Collector", without the quotes of course, and your SSN.
Then, in the home address column, your home address, OR the address your going to be using to recevie your firearms at. The rest should be pretty self explainatory, Place of Birth, DOB, Race and Sex.

2.Sections 8 and 9 start out with "Is applicant or any person named in item 20 above...". Obviously only items 1-7 and 1-8 are above these sections. Also, there are only 12 sections on the form. Am I missing something or do they need a proof reader at BATF?

Everything in Sections 8 & 9 should be marked "NO", unless any of those things pertain to you, if so, put down your pen, and call the local police and turn yourself in!

and yes, there are only 12 sections, between 2 forms, the last section, section 12 being something YOU DO NOT fill in, that is for the BATF's use only. Where you sign, section 11, is the last section you fill in. After you sign, in the box that says "TITLE" put "Collector".

3. I live in a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Do I send the copy to the chief of police of my little burg, or should it go to the Dallas County Sherrifs office?

Your local CLEO at your local PD OR Sheriff's office of your little burg is fine. This is just a courtesy notice to the local PD of your application, no need to send it certified or anything, just snd it normal mail attention to the CLEO, and his name if you have it. Just call them up and ask them, thats what I did. I live in a "burb" of Los Angeles CA, but sent mine to my CLEO of my local towns PD.
I enclosed a short letter, notifying the CLEO of my intentions to obatain a C&R FFL03, and this was a requirement of the BATF to send a copy of my application to him, and NO furthur action is needed by him.

AND, don't forget the Certifcation of Compliance With 18 U.S.C. 922(g) (5) (B) form certifying US Citizenship of the USA. Basically, you fill out the form, and sign it, stating your a citizen of the USA. If you do not include this form, it WILL DELAY your application, as the BATF will send one to you reguesting you fill it out.

Also, in section 10, put your initials to the left of each statement there.

Last but not least, don't forget your Check for $30, and send it to Atlanta, NOT Dallas. Make copies of ALL your paperwork for your records, so you too, can help a confused Cruffler in need one day!

Hope this helps, if your unclear of my instructions or answers, feel free to ask again!

I had NO problems with my C&R paperwork to the BATF, and even though it took 71 days mailbox to mailbox, it was well worth the wait.

GL, and congrats, a C&R is the best thing I ever did for my collecting hobby! It has paid for it self over and over already.

Many Thanks

Thanks for the help, and yes, I will return the favor some day. The coolest part about all this is that my wife has been watching me fill out these official-looking forms for the last day or so without saying anything. She has that "he's up to something" look in her eyes. She's right!!

Actually, the coolest thing is that your wife can order a gun for you (after you have sent your signed copy to about two dozen places), and for less than $100 buck get you a really cool toy as a surprise!

P.S. I don't think this is a problem, the gun being transferred on your license and it is for you, after all.

I took mine to the Sheriff, since by statute in MO he is the Chief LEO even though I live in town and I also work for him so it didn't really matter to me...

for what it's worth

I have a question about section 7:

Can I list my fiance as a responsible person, and if so, can I apply under Individual status or would I need to apply under a corporation or partnership?

Would I then need another form OMB No. 1512-0571?
