Guns YES, Cell Phones NO?

The wife and I went up to Maryland over Easter weekend. We stayed at a friend's house, and spent Easter Sunday with our daughter, granddaughters, son-in-law, and several members of his family.

We had time free on Saturday, so we went to some of the stores the wife likes, and visited several stores that I knew I would like. Three of them, stacked in one building, on University Blvd. in Kensington, MD. A really nice gun shop was in the basement, sort of an antique toy store at street level, and a model railroad shop on the 2d floor.

When I started down the steps to the gun store, there was a large sign over the entrance to the store. "No Cell Phones." I turned mine off, and continued into the store. They were busy taking care of a couple of customers, and taking their monthly inventory. I looked around, and found Ted, the store's owner. He offered to help me, so I asked him what was their problem with cell phones.

Ted told me that the Maryland State Police had advised him, and other dealers, not to allow cell phone usage in their shops. It seems that in investigating gun store burglaries, MSP found that many perpetrators had cell phone images of the stores that were robbed, including images that showed where, and in which display cases, the best guns were to be found.

In other words, the crooks were using cell phone cameras to case their prospective targets.

Don't know what dealers in other states have found, but banning cell phone use by customers seems like a good idea to me.

Incidentally, all three shops were really nice, worth a visit if you are in the area. Don't want to "advertise" the store(s) here, so I'll just put the gun shop's link HERE. Not much, but it has hours and contact information. If you find that store, the other two are upstairs.

Posted here in hopes of getting LEO comments.

Interesting, but what law could he cite in prohibiting cell phones? Absent a law to fall back on, that's like banning Blackberrys, or IPODs, or anything, up to and including clothes! impractical, unless he has a reason, pacemaker on premisis, etc.
I just find it an unusual and shakey ground action, even though I understand it.

Re: Guns YES, Cell Phones NO?

I've seen dealers at gun shows with NO CELL PHONES signs on their table, and telling people not to use them. Apparently they don't want people comparison shopping, or calling friends to discuss prices.

He told me it was not a law. He felt it was sound advice. Since he owned the place he had all the authority he needed. If I had been offended, I would have left the store. I wasn't, looked around, and made a small purchase ... all that I could afford, and more than I really needed.
