I know you tried, and with some folks you just can't win but... it's always better to try and educate than alienate.

Yes, please do. You might have something to say but your posts are so hard to read that it's very difficult to tell.

Re: illeagal ar15 so they "think"

The most obnoxious encounters I've had here in California are the no-nothings that bring obviously illegal guns to the range. One goofball brought a pair of crudely rewelded M14's complete with flash suppressors and bayonet lugs to the range. He had refinished the stocks with urethane that looked like it had been put on with a broom. Another idiot showed up with a mini-14 with a pistol grip stock and flash suppressor. He was letting his adolescent boys blast away with it while sitting there seemingly ignoring his sons while they were shooting. He made no effort at all to teach them anything about shooting. The muzzle blast from the flash suppressor burned a hole in a sandbag and sprayed a shower of sand on the adjacent benches. Somewhere along the way he tells me he "Just bought it and put the stock on it." I packed up and left.

Re: illeagal ar15 so they "think"

I've had a few bad experiences. Like one time when I was hanging targets, and a guy decided to start shooting. And then while I'm shooting, he starts walking out. Or the guys who'd start walking out the range firing. Another guy would bring his dog, and let it run wild, and the first thing it does is runs out in front of everyone firing. Those ones stick out the most, but alot of other weirdos I wouldn't trust with a pointy stick much less a gun. The public range I go to is like a magnet for the mentally deficient. I started going bright and early monday morning, before anyone else gets there.

Re: illeagal ar15 so they "think"

I've not really had any bad experiences like this. Quite the opposite. One trip to the range with my M1A, the Ranger shows up to check for our permits and sees me shooting the beast. He casually walks up and waits till I finish and then asks if I like my M14. I told him it was the M1A, but it didn't matter. He says he carried an M14 in Vietnam and asks if he can run a magazine through it. He left with a huge grin on his face. Usually when I bring it to the range everyone there wants to see it, take photos of it etc. Can't wai to take my DPMS AR to the range for her virgin runs.

If you weren't on the East Coast, I'd've thought you belonged to the same Southern California club I did, and were using their range.
As a concession to the USFS, in order to renew the club's lease, we had to agree to admit anyone to the club who applied and who paid the fees. You wouldn't believe the yahoos who started showing up, and what they tried to do. NoI guess you would, since you've experienced some of the same things.
What was for 40 years a pretty, safe, comfortable place way out in the countryside, where no supervision was ever needed and everybody knew each other and got along well, became on weekends a kind of scary Hell, complete with casual vandalism and excessive trash.
Thanks, USFS.
