AR10 Ammunition

I have a Armalite AR10 which doesn't like military surplus ammo. I know that Armalite does not recommend military or reloaded ammo. Additionally, it being a gas gun, .308 win. commercial ammunition may or may not be recommended either, their tech notes say, military FMJ projectiles. They also say, hunting type bullets are not recommended. Does anyone have any insight on what loads meet the rifle's specs? Is it safe to assume any reload developed for a M1A would be ok? It's a "fun" rifle to shoot, but I am not happy with the "failure to eject" issues.

I'm a long way from being an AR10 authority, I would yield to MOE and many others who know a lot about them. I own an M1A, bushy 308, and 2 AR10 rifles. I shoot FPGM factory ammo for the most part. I have some surplus Port, Aussie, and S. African and USGI ammo that I also shoot. When sighting in I have used the surplus to get down to the fine tuning and then go to the Federal. I do not have extraction issues with any of the ammo, in any of the rifles, so I think your rifle has a problem with extraction. The extractor on the AR10 has a spring with a "donut"to provide the correct tension. You might look and make sure your rifle has the correct one. You can find out about this in the tech section at AL. Point is that unless something in the chamber is holding on to the case and tearing off the bottom of the case it should come out. Good luck!

The only ammo Armalite doesn't recommend is reloads, same as nearly any other maker. Ask GLOCK- ha-ha. I dont know where you heard they don't recommend "military ammo" but that is BS. I have used every type of surplus there is, including wolf- I have yet to have problem. I have 5 of them.

They want people to stay away from SP hunting ammo because it can sometimes cause FTFeeds when the SPs get deformed when they hit the feedramps. I use them wih great results.

What year was this thing made? If its a older model then you can call Armalite and they will send a new "Dual spring" and O rings to help the extraction issue. Call Jenifer at 1-800-336-0184 and she will fix it.

If your gun doesnt like surplus ammo then there is something wrong with it. But what does that really mean- need more info on your problem.

As to reloads I shoot them also. Dont go strait from your M14 loads to the AR10. I is notorious for overpressure. Start low and work up. I use 43-45 ish Varget with 168's YMMV. Dont use this load with military brass.

Overall anythink the M14 shoots, should work in the AR10

The only ammo I used in my AR10 was either Federal GMM or Blackhills Match, both in 175gr flavor. It was built as a long range tack driver so no surplus for its tummy!

As mentioned, ArmaLite frowns on reloads only. I'm planning on picking up 1 or 2 of their "new & improved" AR10s when they come out later this year. These will be field guns and if they don't like surplus ammo then there's something wrong with them.

The rack grade AR10 was designed to eat quality NATO spec military ammo, not the garbage type. If you're having ejection problems you might want to get the "O" ring upgrade mentioned.

What ammo are you feeding it?

Thanks Guys for the information. Sorry I took a while to respond, we had weather which knocked out the power.
I have been using South African ammo. It came in a sealed battle pack. The ammunition looks in new condition and doen't cause any issues with my M1As.
I asked the Sierra techs about AR10 reloads and their response was to use any 308win loads. They contended the AR10 wasn't like an M1A and it would fire commercial ammo without a problem.
I called Armalite about the parts suggested by the previous posts and I am waiting for a returned call.

AR10 Ammunition

Today I went to the range to fire my AR10. I took some "Break Free" and lubed the bolt carrier assy, and around the lugs. It seems my problems with the ammo has disappeared. I fired the South African surplus in the standard 10rd. magazine and in 3 modified M1A 20 rd. magazines. The rifle didn't hic-cup once. I spray brass everywhere. It sure is a fun rifle to shoot especially when everything works as expected.
Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it.
