A friend is looking for someplace local (Houston TX area) to buy cheap bulk .45 ACP ammo (500 to 1000 rounds at a time of practice 230grn ball…).
I recommended Houston Cartridge Company only to find they closed up shop a couple of years ago! We checked into some mail order sites, but shipping costs seem to offset any savings. We just started shooting some informal IDPA, and the costs are starting to get to him shopping at WalMart.

Any suggestions out there?

(I already suggested a reloading press, but he still new to this sport and is not ready to dive into that just yet.)

Thanks for any help guys!

check with http://www.ammoman.com the price you see is with shipping. Other places would be AIM or centerfire systems or Graff and sons or midway. I wish centerfire systems would have another special where they have a flat rate($9.95) on shipping including ammo. Last time they did a couple of friends and I went together and the order was for 22,500 rounds of mixed ammo for only $9.95 shipping. Had to love it and the ammo was a good price also.

Best place for cheap bulk ammo purchase??
Unfortunately, the way that outrageously rising materials costs have driven prices up the last couple of years... and with the HUGE price increase that most ammo makers and distributors announced on January 1..... the words "cheap" and "ammo" can no longer legally be used in the same sentence....

Best to all,

OK--I'm gonna let out an obscure li'l secret--then y'all will make a run on it, and my source will have dried up, but, (sniff) I just love youse guys! (sniff)

Natchez at http://www.natchezss.com
has CCI Blazer BRASS (not aluminum) for cheaper than the CCI Blazer alum cased stuff. As in reloadable. Fairly clean-shootin' stuff, too.

Methinks, as well, this is what most Wally-worlds carry, about same price as Natch, minus freight.

There. I said it. Boy do I feel better. I think...

I have done quite a bit of research recently on local and mail-order/internet ammo prices (and reloading components, too). As I'm constantly short of funds, keeping ammo costs as low as possible is a major issue for me.

Reloading is still the cheapest way to go. If you either don't want to reload, or can't afford to invest in the equipment (or don't have enough room), JJ's tip is the best one - as far as pistol ammo goes.

Blazer Brass at Wal-Mart is the hands down CHEAPEST pistol ammo currently available, barring a special sale elsewhere. It's really good stuff, too - although the powders used can give quite a muzzle flash, esp. in shorter barrelled guns. Otherwise, it's excellent, and the brass is also excellent for reloading. I'd rate it on a par with, or perhaps just slightly below, Winchester and Starline brass - and better than Remington and Federal.

Current prices at my local Wal-Mart (west central Florida):

Winchester White Box (USA)

45 Auto FMJ, 100 pak $32
9mm Luger FMJ, 100 pak $14
38 Special +P SJHP, 50 pak $17
357 Mag FMJ, 50 pak $20

Rem-UMC
45 Auto FMJ, 100 pak $35

Blazer Brass is about $8 per 50 in 9mm Luger, about $11 per 50 in 45 Auto. Unfortunately, I don't have exact current prices for the Blazer, as I haven't bought any recently - I've been reloading all of my ammo.

Anyone see that little article in the current American Rifleman on lead prices in the UK? It's on page 25 of the February '08 issue. States that lead in the UK has gone from $450 per ton in 2003 to $3200 per ton at end of year 2007! And that's just for lead, folks... Copper has tripled in price as well. It is said that things should stabilize sometime this year (prices, anyway), but I kinda doubt it. With the Chinese snatching up anything they can get, and there being no new mines opening up, demand will exceed supply for as long as this situation remains as it is. The ONLY way for the prices of essential metals to drop is for new mines to open and begin full production ASAP. Recycling more scrap isn't going to help, as the Chinese are buying it all and shipping it home for their own use.

The way I beat up the pricing is to make friends with the guys at the stores!!

Sportsmas Warehouse!! I have a buddy that gives me $10 off $50 coupons all the time!!

Ask the guys at the stores!! I do and it usually pays off!!

I got about 50 of these things and when I need more he mails them to me!!

Does anyone else see an ominous pattern in an Oriental country buying up a lot of US scrap metal? Or am I just getting paranoid in my old age? As my folks (WW2 vintage) might say, there's a little nip in the air....
I've heard they're finally modernizing their infastructure. There's places that don't even have electricity in china. While its possible they're building up a war machine, its more possible they're finally catching up with the last century.

I'm hoping prices stabilize and start relaxing soon. I'm gonna be pretty upset if I have to take up airsoft.

Before anyone gets too picky about the current high prices, remember that the word "cheap" is increasingly misused.

Compare in your mind the offering price including shipping to a 10% price hike in the next 60-120 days.

It often pays to buy enough to get you through at least the next price increase.

I used to think of a 1000rd case as a decent amount of ammunition.
