Has anyone had any experiences with the A-Max bullets in the M1 or M1A? I know the old standard is Sierra MKs but I have seen some real good performances with the A-Max lines in some bolt guns.
I tried the AMax's in both my match Garand and M1A's and they looked like a 00buck shot group.... A friend of mine with his tricked out HP M1A likes them....... I'll stick with Sierra
They worked fine in mine, but not as good a J4 or a 168 sierra. The AMax is almost a VLD bullet and will work best if you can seat it almost all the way out the lands. In the M14 this means they won't fit in the mag.
I have had good luck with them in several Garands. I load both 155 and 168 grainers over Varget powder. I have not tried them in my M1A.
In my Savage .308 10FP they are the best shooting bullet I have found.
At 100yd, none of my rifles shoot the 178 AMAXs as well as they do at 300yd. They do need some time to sleep, and definitely do better in a faster barrel (1-10 vs. 1-12). That said, on any average day, my M1A Super Match shoots in the .4sMOA at 300yd, and I'd 'overestimate' a guess of about ~.8MOA at 600M. Neither I nor "my spotter" can say for sure because all my M1A-600M+ data is silhouettes, but the "groups" sure seem tight and predictable.
Ghostface,
What recipe are you using for the AR-10 / 178AMAX load?
I shoot 155gr Amax's in both my M1A and M1 Garand. I've gotten outstanding accuracy in both rifles. In the Garand, I use them with 48gr of IMR4895 and get around 1.5" groups at 100y, using the battle sights. In my M1A, I get 0.75" groups, using 43gr Varget and using optics
Right now I'm using the Factory stuff, I'm still buying my reloading equipment and with X-mas around the corner I have put it on hold. I have only used the 168 grain so far.
I plan on using IMR 4895 LC brass CCI BR-2 primers and of course the AMAX.
