The 30 T/C is slightly smaller in capacity than the 308 Winchester, but delivers ballistic performance exceeding the 30-06. With a muzzle velocity of 3000 fps, the 150 grain load outperforms the 308 Win by 180 fps and outperforms the 30-06 by nearly 100 fps.
The "advantage" is .30-06 performance out of a short action. It's a perceived niche rather than an actual need. I find the differences between .30-06 and .308 not worth arguing about.
Then again, I consider everything from .257 Bob on up to .300 Win Mag to be about the same when it hits an animal...never could tell the difference in anything I shot. But it matters greatly to the splitters of hairs.
