Just wondering if anyone could recommend reliable sources w/reasonable prices. Found one place with an ok price, but shipping was almost $30 for 400 rnds. weight was about 30 lbs according to the shipping calculations, so that's about $1/lb. Seems kinda high.
Because most surplus ammo dealers ship via UPS the rate will vary greatly from dealer to dealer depending on where you live, as UPS's rates are determined by zones as well as weight and size. For example, since I live in Texas, shipping from AIM Surplus is cheaper than it is from Outdoormarksman.com because AIM is closer to Texas. Ammoman.com includes an average shipping cost into the base price and doesn't add on a seperate shipping charge. Depending on your proximity to other vendors, Ammoman's "no shipping charge" may or may not save you money.
A short list of surplus ammo suppliers:
AIM Surplus
Outdoormarksman.com
Ammoman.com
Dans Ammo
You may also want to check the big suppliers such as Samco, SOG, etc - usually they have adds in Shotgun News. As it now appears is necessary when buying M14 magazines, you need to really read the advertisements when buying surplus to be sure you get what you want - like corrosive vs noncorrosive ammo.
I'm hoping to get a collection of sources. I've found a few on the net, but every now and then I read about someone else out there and wonder how do i find them.
I've bought most of my .308 from AIM Surplus, their shipping to MD is usually $13.00 per thousand rounds. I find that far cheaper than the sport'smans guides of the world. Some of these venders certainly make money of of shipping.
