When I was working up loads for my M1, I tried both powders and got better groupings with IMR-4895.

Both work, its just a matter of find out what your particular rifle likes best.

Reloading for the M1 Garand

When I first started to load for my IHC Garand those powders were both recomended to me. I bought one pound each of the IMR powders and found out that my RCBS powder measure hated the 4064 long grains and I had to push down hard to cut them.

I finally shot up that can and started on the 4895 and that sure meters much better in the powder measure. I also bought a can of H 4895 just to try and my rifle likes that powder better.

Now that Hodgdon bought IMR powder I wonder if they will still keep making both powders in the future?

Hi my records show that I started out with 44 grains with both powders and worked up from there. I just buy the fmj bullets from midway and shoot only at 100 yards.

I have tried many brands of primers and keep going back to cci. I bought 1000 win. large rifle primers not long ago and they seem to go into the primer pockets too easy. After I use the winchester primers up I will go back to cci. Not bashing winchester but this is just my ideas.

Good luck.............smithey

Smithly,
Keep an eye on those primer pockets. If you find the primers going in too easy that is a sign that the cases are on their last legs.

As far as Primers go...

Corvetteed, As far as Primers go, I strickly use CCI # 34 Mil. Spec. 7.62 primers. They're made especially for M1, M1A,and SKS tpye rifles because they have a little harder/tougher primer face to help prevent slam fires. I got the last 5000 box from 1st shooters Supply. If you don't know what a "slam fire" is there's a lot of info on this site on other posts, etc. Just thought I'd add my two cents...

Benn using standard CCI #200 LR primers for over two years in my M1, never a problem.
